Swartland Red Blend | Old Vine Mediterranean Varieties

Overview

Rall Red 2022 is the flagship red blend from Donovan Rall, one of South Africa’s leading voices in modern, terroir-driven winemaking. Produced in the Swartland from a carefully selected combination of Mediterranean varieties, this wine reflects both vineyard character and a minimalist philosophy in the cellar.

The blend is typically Syrah-led, supported by Grenache, Carignan and Cinsault sourced from old bush vines grown on decomposed granite and schist soils. The 2022 vintage captures the hallmark Rall style — elegant, savoury and finely structured, with freshness and balance at its core rather than weight or extraction.

Tasting Notes

Colour: Deep ruby with vibrant crimson edges.

Nose: Complex and perfumed. Aromas of red and black berries — cherry, raspberry and blackberry — are layered with white pepper, fynbos, dried herbs and a subtle earthy minerality. Floral notes and a touch of spice lift the profile.

Palate: Medium-bodied and beautifully composed. Juicy red fruit leads, supported by savoury spice, black pepper and hints of olive tapenade. The tannins are fine and structured, while the acidity brings energy and precision. The blend shows harmony and restraint rather than heaviness.

Finish: Long, dry and savoury, with lingering spice, mineral notes and a refined herbal edge.
