Belgian Flanders Red Ale | Oak-Aged Beer Blend | Brouwerij De Brabandere

Overview

Petrus Flanders is a traditional Belgian Flanders Red Ale produced by Brouwerij De Brabandere in Bavikhove, West Flanders. It showcases one of Belgium’s most distinctive brewing traditions: blending mature oak-aged beer with younger brown ale to create a balance between acidity, malt sweetness and oak-derived complexity.

The beer incorporates 33% beer matured in oak for two years, which is then blended with fresh young brown ale. The mature component contributes refreshing acidity and vinous complexity, while the younger beer softens the profile with roasted malt and caramel character.

The result is an approachable introduction to the Flanders Red style — complex enough for experienced Belgian beer drinkers but considerably softer and easier-drinking than many intensely sour ales.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Clear Bordeaux-red to deep ruby-brown, with warm mahogany highlights and a creamy off-white head. The brewery officially describes the colour as Bordeaux and clear.

Nose: Inviting aromas of caramelised malt and toasted bread are joined by red fruit, subtle dried fruit and gentle oak. A light vinous acidity adds freshness and complexity.

Palate: Smooth and beautifully balanced. Caramel and softly roasted malt initially provide sweetness before developing into red-fruit, oak and refreshing tart notes. The aged beer provides acidity without pushing the beer into aggressively sour territory, making Petrus Flanders particularly approachable.

Finish: Warm, smooth and refreshing, with lingering caramel, roasted malt, subtle fruit and gentle acidity. The brewery specifically highlights its soft roasted and caramel character and warm, smooth finish.

The Oak-Aged Character

The key to Petrus Flanders is the use of beer that has undergone two years of maturation in oak. Rather than bottling this mature beer on its own, the brewery blends it with younger brown ale.

This blending technique allows the brewer to balance the mature beer's acidity and oak character against the sweeter, maltier flavours of the young beer. It is a classic technique associated with the great sour and red ales of Flanders.
