First released in 1962 as a tribute by Masataka Taketsuru to his late Scottish wife, Super Nikka Rare Old is a cornerstone of Nikka’s legacy. This elegant blended whisky combines the soft fruitiness of Miyagikyo with the subtle smokiness of Yoichi, creating a balanced dram that’s both nostalgic and timeless. Rich in history and flavour, Super Nikka remains a symbol of devotion and craft in Japanese whisky culture.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Rounded and expressive, with aromas of dried apricot, ripe pear, and gentle peat smoke. Hints of old leather, sandalwood, and spiced honey lend warmth and complexity.
Palate: Smooth and layered. Notes of baked apple, vanilla custard, and malted grain meet a touch of nutmeg and soft oak. A trace of smoke weaves subtly throughout, adding structure without dominance.
Finish: Medium-long, with lingering notes of toffee, toasted cereal, and a whisper of peat. Balanced and satisfying.
Serving Suggestion
Best enjoyed neat or with a dash of water to unlock the delicate peat and fruit interplay. Also excels in a classic Japanese whisky highball—clean, elegant, and endlessly drinkable.
Collector’s Note
A foundational release in the Nikka lineup, Super Nikka Rare Old is as much a piece of Japanese whisky history as it is a pleasure to drink. Ideal for collectors, newcomers, and anyone seeking a beautifully balanced blend with a heartfelt story behind it.
