Lemon Meringue Pie from Cape Town’s Afro Caribbean Brewing Company is exactly what it says on the tin — or can, in this case — a liquid take on the classic lemon meringue pie.
Brewed as a Pastry Sour, it combines fresh lemon zest, vanilla and lactose with a richer malt bill to create something creamy, citrusy, tart and unapologetically dessert-like. At 5.8% ABV, there’s enough body to carry all that flavour, while a touch of acidity stops things from becoming overly sweet.
It's basically lemon meringue pie you can drink. Which feels like progress.
Tasting Notes
Colour: Hazy golden-yellow with a soft white head.
Nose: Bright, zesty lemon leads the way, followed by sweet vanilla, biscuit and a creamy, dessert-like character.
Palate: Smooth and creamy with fresh lemon citrus, vanilla sweetness and biscuity malt. Lactose adds body and richness, while the sour acidity cuts neatly through the sweetness and keeps everything balanced.
Finish: Creamy yet refreshing, with lingering lemon zest, vanilla and a gentle tartness.
